How treat-dispensing toys work

Treat-dispensing toys look simple from the outside, but the mechanism is what decides whether your dog stays interested or walks away after a minute.

The basic principle

Food sits in an internal chamber with an opening too small for the food to fall out on its own. Movement shifts the food toward the opening, so your dog only gets a reward when they act. That link between effort and food is the whole point.

Why release rate matters

Too fast and the toy empties in seconds. Too slow and your dog gives up. Beginner toys like the Treat Trail Puzzle Ball release food generously so dogs learn the game quickly. Weighted or wobbling designs like the Workday Wobble Feeder add unpredictability once the basics are easy.

Matching the food

Dry, roughly uniform pieces work best. Food that is too large jams the opening; food that is too small pours out. If your dog's kibble is unusual in shape, test with a small handful first.

Getting started

Load generously for the first few sessions, use hard flooring where the toy rolls easily, and supervise until you know how your dog handles it. Browse all puzzle feeders or find your starting point with Find My Dog's Level.
